Thinking about working abroad? Read this first...

Have you ever thought about working abroad? If not, it’s worth looking into – and in this blog, we’ve explained why.

It can be an exciting opportunity to experience a new culture and make a good income, but there are a few things you should consider to help you make the decision.

Read on for our tips on making your move overseas as smooth as possible.

There are a few things you need to think about before you apply for work overseas.

While the prospect of working in another country is appealing, especially as a defence contractor, there are several things that you need to know in order to be well-prepared for making the decision.

The most important one to start with is where you'll be calling home...

1. Which country do you want to move to and work in?

This will have a big impact on the type of work you can get, your quality of life, and how easy it is to get set up there. Do some research on countries that interest you and make sure you understand the pros and cons before making a decision.

Two countries that are increasing in popularity are Germany and Poland. There are several reasons for this, including quality of life, being near to other countries in Western Europe, the general lifestyle as well as the growing number of work opportunities.

The next thing to think about is whether or not you have the required skills for the roles available in your chosen country. You also have to consider that some roles (defence contractor roles for example) will require security clearance from their home country, so check that this is possible before applying for any positions.

2. What opportunities will be available to you when you get there?

The roles available to you will depend on the country you're looking to move to. There are certain jobs in some fields that are in higher demand in certain countries, so make sure you do your homework to see where your specific speciality is required.

With over 20 years of recruitment experience in the maintenance, supply and logistics and transportation fields, having deployed over 900 personnel, we are able to guide you on which country is best suited to you.

3. Whether you want to/will be able to take your family with you

This is an important consideration for many people before taking on overseas work, as it can make a big difference to your quality of life while working abroad.

If you have young children, you'll need to think about schools and childcare, while if you have older children, they may need to think about leaving their current school or university. Then, of course, you need to consider if it's even possible to take your family with you during the contract.

If you are a looking to move abroad with your family, these are just a few things that you'll need to consider, including:

  • health insurance for your family
  • visas for your family
  • in-date passports for all members
  • schools and entry requirements for your children
  • moving your pets
  • what are the country’s requirements on vaccines, restrictions, quarantine, etc.

4. Whether you need to take any language lessons
